The Cow Hugger Pin at Herbivore Clothing Company $1.00 |
So I thought as a nice little Sunday afternoon post, I'd share some cool green things to help you get into the St.Patty Day celebration this year, and of course protect you from those eager pinchers. I'm strong believer in prevention. And green.
Plus there's a little contest at the end...
The Vortex Trading Company has a number of cool designs that you can get printed on a green American Apparel Shirt (see why that matters below). My favorite today is the UFO-logy Flying Saucer shirt. It features "31 common UFO saucer types that have been witnessed by our follow earthlings" and has an undeniable nerd-factor that I find irresistible. It reminds me of The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951 not 2008) and that alone makes smile.
Vintage Map Oval Necklaces by The Weekend Store on Buy Olympia are a cool and unique way to add a little classy green to any outfit. I like the Paris one myself, and not just because it's super green, but they have LA, New York, Chicago and San Francisco too. Several of those are green as well.
American Apparel Leisure Dress in Kelly Green... sure it's kinda preppy, but it's still kinda awesome. It's comfortable and not so trendy you'll feel dated in 3 months, but it's also American Apparel. A lot of people don't realize how important it is to buy ethical clothing. I don't just mean skipping the fur, leather, and wool. I used to work in the fashion industry promoting animal friendly fashion, and admit I found that challenging at times. But there's so much more than just cruelty to animals to fix in this industry: it's impact on the environment, support of wage slavery all over the world, and products that are often disposed of or replaced based on trends rather than if the item has actually worn out.
American Apparel is a pretty remarkable business model in the fashion industry. Yes, they sell leather, so they're not perfect, but they operate the largest garment factory in the US and are vertically integrated, eliminating the use of sewing subcontractors and offshore labor. Their average sewing machine operator makes around $12 an hour. They also promote environmentally-friendly practices, using solar power, recycled fabric scraps, and organic cotton. I mean, even their stores in China sell American-made clothing, produced by people with benefits who are paid more than a criminal wage. Similar companies like No Sweat haven't survived in this fickle and unethical industry, and that's a real shame.
"Curse you and your inevitable betrayal!"

ReplyDeletehaha Wash from Firefly!
Pshaw, no need to Google that quote! Wash says it in Firefly.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite quote... hmm. I'll stick with the Firefly theme and choose "If wishes were horses, we'd all be eatin' steak." Totally not vegan, but totally hilarious. Oh, Jayne!
The quote is from firefly, but I won't pick anything so sophisticated for my fav scifi quote (I may be a bit liberal with "scifi", but I just saw this movie last night and it's fresh on my mind) "Ray, if someone asks if you are a god, you say yes!"
ReplyDeleteFirefly. (And I totally had to look it up.)
ReplyDeleteHi, I'm new-ish to your site and following you on Facebook. Thanks for some great ideas for food. The quote is by Wash from Firefly.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite quote is from Doctor Who, "Who looks at a screwdriver and thinks, 'Ooh, this could be a little more sonic'?"
Hi! I love your site and have been quietly following for some time. Just wanted to say hi and that I have 2 favourtie quotes:

Get away from her, you Bitch! - Aliens

ReplyDeleteRipley/Aliens
FIREFLY!
ReplyDeleteLove anything Whedon.
And, if you're up for a roadtrip-he's directing the next Avengers (as I'm sure you know) and will be shooting in Cleveland-where I currently live.
Right downtown there's a new restaurant called the Flaming Ice Cube that is vegan and quite tasty. Good for a break in between being on extra on the Avengers. ;)
isn't the quote actually "Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!"...? (Wash, from Firefly, of course)
ReplyDeleteMy favorite quote is "Also, I can kill you with my brain" (River)
:)
Gotta go old school, but I'm torn. Either...
ReplyDelete"I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that."
from 2001: A Space Odyssey
or
"Do or do not. There is no try."
Yoda, but I'm not certain which Star Wars movie it is (some geek I am, eh?)
Wash! from Firefly :-)
ReplyDeleteMy favorite quote comes from The Fountain
"For every shadow, no matter how deep, is threatened by morning light."
OR
Star Wars- "stay on target"
That's a Wash quote!!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite sci-fi quote is "This must be Thursday. I never could get the hang of Thursdays" Pretty much applies every week around this time. ;)
Wash from Firefly.
ReplyDelete(@Willow Rosen - Avengers shooting in Cleveland?! I've been wanting to try the Flaming Ice Cube & that might convince my boyfriend to make the almost 4-hour drive!)
My favorite quotes are all from Doctor Who. This is number 1 right now: "Hello. I'm the Doctor. Basically... run."
:)
It's that same guy with the blond hair & the loud shirts who is a leaf on the wind... Hoban Washburne aka Wash.
ReplyDeleteArgh...did that wrong. Hoban Washburne said it...and my favorite quote is from the same world - "I can kill you with my brain"...or "We're stupid & we'll die." I kinda love River Tam.
ReplyDeleteWash - Firefly!!! <3 One of my favorite series. Hmm - several of my favorite quotes are already up there - lemme see if I can think of one that's not. Ah - to be quoted in a self-depreciating manner - "If there's anything more important than my ego around, I want it caught and shot now." -Zaphod Beeblebrox
ReplyDeleteWash from Firefly said it.
ReplyDelete(one of)my favorite scifi quotes from BG:
“There's a reason you separate military and the police. One fights the enemies of the state, the other serves and protects the people. When the military becomes both, then the enemies of the state tend to become the people.” --Commander Adama
